911 దాడులకి ప్రతీకారం అనుకున్నా అనుకోకపోయినా, ఇన్నేళ్ళుగా బిన్ లాడెన్ అమెరికను యంత్రాంగానికి చిక్కకుండా తప్పించుకుంటూనే ఉన్నాడనేది అటు ఆ యంత్రాంగ వ్యవస్థకీ, ఇటు ప్రభుత్వానికీ (అది రిపబ్లికన్ అయినా, డెమోక్రాట్ అయినా) అరికాలిలో ముల్లు విరిగినట్టు సలుపుతూనే ఉండి ఉంటుంది. ఇటు బిన్ లాడెన్ వైపుకీ, అటు సద్దాం హుసేన్ వేపుకీ మొదటినించీ ఈ పద్ధతి మీదనే దృష్టిపెట్టి ఉంటే బహుశా ఇన్ని యుద్ధాలూ, ఇంత తీవ్రమైన జననష్టమూ జరగకుండేదేమో. అయినా యుద్ధం జరిపిన కారణం అల్ ఖయిడాని వేటాడానికి కాదనీ, దిగాలుపడుతున్న అమెరికను యుద్ధవ్యవస్థకి ఒక ఊతం ఇచ్చి నిలబెట్టేందుకనీ తెలిసినదే.
ఇక మన తెలుగు కవులందరూ బిన్ లాడెన్ గుణగణ కీర్తనాలోలురవుతారు కాబోలు. అమెరికను గూఢచార్లు ఈ ఘనకార్యం సాధించడానికి ఎంతకష్టపడ్డారోగాని, మొత్తానికి కొన్ని నెలలపాటు అరుణతార పేజీలు నింపేందుకు మంచి ముడిసరుకు దొరుకుతుంది.
కేవలం బిన్‌లాడెన్ హత్యతో అల్ ఖయిడా నడ్డి విరిగిపోతుందా? పాశ్చాత్య దేశాలపట్ల మధ్యప్రాచ్యంలే రేగిన క్రోధజ్వాలలు ఆరిపోతాయా? ఇప్పటికిప్పుడు ఆఫ్ఘనిస్తాన్ చల్లబడుతుందా? బహుశా ఇవేవీ త్వరలో జరక్క పోవచ్చు. కానీ ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా అల్ ఖయిడా వ్యవస్థకి ఇది తీవ్రమైన దెబ్బ అనే అనిపిస్తున్నది. Moreover, the western alliance had been consistently and persistently chipping away at the second and third layers of leadership in Al-quaida throughout the world. Therefore, it looks extremely unlikely that a successor to bin-Laden could step up and assume the slain leader's mantle.
However, I am unable to feel any jubilation or celebration. It is simply not in me - this typical American feeling of an eye for an eye. And I can not shake off a feeling of vague discomfort about the general fallout from all this. Though there is no clear second-in-command in al-quaida, I am sure there will be some retaliation against the west from what remains of the group.
Be that as it may, one can not deny that this is a significant personal victory for President Obama. For a moment, when I first read the news this morning, the thought crossed my mind if this is Mr. Obama's version of wagging the dog. I decided it is not so - though he had recently declared his intention to maintain his job for a second term, the 2012 presidential election is still too far away, nor is any other significant electoral battle looming up. While he certainly faces challenging legislative battles over budgets and cuts, I don't think any of them are particularly threatening. In a nutshell, IMO, Obama doesn't need to wag the dog. I also do not think he'd be one to wag when there is no need to.
