నగరంపై నీడ - సౌభాగ్య

My translation and recitation of contemporary Telugu poetry. These translations and audio were originally posted on Sulekha.com Coffeehouse under the title "Thursday Telugu Verse." The idea is to introduce contemporary Telugu poetry to non-Telugu readers.

Shadow Over the City

- Soubhagya

The Sun, with his throat slit, lay entombed in the hills in horrible bloody vomit.
Infant moon, still-born, floats up in the blackness of night, red and repulsive.
Stars stare too scared, stuttering in hiccups.
Only the darkness smiled, smugly blissful.
Like a time-bomb ticking hidden in a silencer-box,
The city’s pulse throbs in the womb of curfew.
Religion, the midwife, comes to assist in delivering deaths,
Ripping through the hearts with battle-axes.
Somewhere, the future breathes its last, murdered by the past.
Among the dark clouds like black devils,
Lightning pierces through like a broadsword.
On the unpopulated streets,
Street lamps converse with shuttered kiosks.
Even behind bolted doors, bodies tremble, hearts shudder.
Among the thatched huts, little lamp flames fluttering in the breeze
Metamorphose into machetes, severing throats – that’s the metaphysical truth.
Prison-barred windows; snake-like shadows.
The big hand of the clock, at 12 midnight,
Murdered the small hand in its death-grip.
The seconds hand, like a scorpion’s sting,
Continues to strike at the heart.

A request: Please show this translation to your friends who do not know Telugu. What did they think? Does the translation read like a poem? Were they able to understand it? Did they think some further explanations were necessary to appreciate the poem better? Let me know.

Though I look at this blog once in a while, I never commented here because most of the stuff falls under my 'couldn't-care-less' category.

But I read this poem(?), and there is an irresistible urge from inside, as it were, to say what it feels to read a poem(?) like this.

I am no literary critic, for which I am thankful to gods, so I may not offer you the postmortem of a writing like this in appealing and decorative terms. But as a layman who loves the beautiful language which English is, I felt that the words, incoherent badly chosen - were being molested, after reading this.

The Sun's 'throat' slit, and the bloody vomit? Yes, sir- you were right. its not just the scene. The expression too is horrible.

nowhere have I seen 'poetry' brought down to such ugly lows. Not on/off the internet.

As a very good critic yourself, I believe you would take this comment in the *right* spirit.

I know you will!
